Here's part two, where I repair the gear by super gluing it back to the metal shaft. After watching the unit operate, it's clear that the little drive gear is under a lot of stress at certain points of the icemaking cycle. I think that is simply the way it was designed. Only time will tell if this is the complete fix. Let's hope it is!
